  1. There are various reasons:
    I) Doctors usually spend most of their time in hospital rather than home.
II) They compare their good old classmates who picked up Engineering field as their choice and are enjoying their life,
III) With present trend of manhandling issues (attacks on doctors)
IV) They are being controlled by the Govt (private hospitals)….etc.,
These are the few ones for which they regret!

  2. True…parents must be prepared to support aspiring Doctors emotionally and financially for at least 15+ years of study and public service. Or even beyond that period. At the end income may not be comparable to other professionals. So one must be really passionate about medicine, especially if being first Doctor in family . Being born on family of Doctors it makes it little easier.

  3. Yes..rarely i have seen any doct fren of mine wanting their chidlren to be a doc…n moreso the corporate hospital.marketing strategies also fall short at time..n the years of studies need a lot of patience but anyday doctors are Gods messengers.. i met the best doc during my moms journey

  4. Few years back, I was only aware of the difficulties from the patient perspective, but slowly got to understand the other side as well. Agree with most of these points now. Some day, would share what I have learnt as well. The other aspect that needs to be covered is how medicine is going to shape up in next five to ten years through technology interventions, and how that needs to be factored in when going for medicine as a career choice.

  5. I’m not sure if this happens in big cities but in small cities like Udgir, my home town, doctors are threatened for charging high. When I asked how much they charged, it was around 12-13k for delivery whereas friend of mine paid 115k for the same in Mumbai. So if you compare the price, it’s negligible. In smaller cities it is very easy to get political links and pressurise the doctors to cut the bills. It’s like get treated and during discharge when you are asked to clear the bill, call some local leader. Worst is sometimes these leaders asks Dr. to release the patient & collect money from him. And when you go to get money, they throw money at you like you are a beggar. That’s too humiliating. I can see through his eyes when he was narrating this to me.
Now, the last thing these parents want their kids to become is doctor.

  6. Problems listed. Solutions?
PS: I am not from the medicine field so I have absolutely no idea about the solutions for these problems. But I am a listener & learner, so I can think of getting some of those solutions in the real world, at least.

  7. After enduring so much of hardship while becoming a dr one wonders if you should allow your ward to be a dr. Whether first generation or not. But when you experience the life saving moment of a family member you become sure one should send your ward to become a doctor. It has got an magnetic aura that cannot be compared with any other profession.

  8. Mohammed A. Omar, agreed. But the health apps that are available now are simply practice management tools. Already I know doctors who monopolize their specialties in their respective cities because they are early adapters of, say, Practo.
But there ate three other forces that are gathering at the horizon:
    1. Nutrition medicine. Doctors are not trained at this and you don’t require an MBBS degree to give out nutritional advice.
    2. Microbiome fixes. Same as above. Only, fixing microbiome is even aimpler than nutritional medicine.
    3. AI aided diagnosis
Between 1 and 2, I suspect that large volume of current diseases being managed by doctors will be effectively sent into remission, often without even needing a doctor. Initially this will be managed by nutritionists or less. Eventually, these will be self administered by patients using an app, which may cost nothing or next to nothing.
Doctors will still continue to handle things that can have bad comsequence if mishandled (e.g. hormone balancing). But this market will go to early adapters of coming scaling technologies and AI.

  9. Innovations ! Innovations ! are a constant… Mass diffusion though may take few decades… Nutrition & AI aided diagnosis I understand, Microbiome will research its implications…thanks for sharing.
