When there are no free products, people work in silos, capture a small segment and stay happy. The clients also don’t get chance to try other products since they are already committed to one product that somehow meets their basic need.
Let’s look at the other side of the coin. Google has Microsoft Office killer products for last so many years. Yet MS Office is still the largest revenue generator for Microsoft. We have so many enterprise level opensource databases. Yet likes of Oracle and MSSQL have thrived.
The vision behind FREE or PAID products are different. They operate at different scales. The FREE products have to work at much higher scale to make some decent money.
