Once upon a time, I was proud to be an IVF specialist.
During this Coronavirus Lockdown, doctors are being forced to abandon their common sense. Even though their primary fiduciary responsibility is to care for their patients, they are being made to blindly obey the mindless protocols laid down by Government bureaucrats.
The tragedy is that unscrupulous hospital administrators are using this opportunity to maximise their income, by ordering unnecessary tests for their patients, under the pretext of protecting their doctors and maximising the safety of their patients.
However, cook-book medicine , where doctors unthinkingly check off boxes on government forms as ordered, is harming rather than helping patients.
I am ashamed that we have abandoned our primary responsibility as medical professionals to put our patients first, and have ended up prioritising the paperwork !
This approach is helping only the cheque books of the hospitals !
I used to be so proud of being a doctor once upon a time – but that was a long time ago !
