Why we pass the buck

Diffusion of responsibility—the rule of nobody—is a common feature of many large organizations, where almost nothing is done alone.


It is a fancy phrase for passing the buck. We take our cues from those above us—especially in hierarchical organizations—and if they do nothing, what are we supposed to do? We can always use our salary, our career, to justify turning a blind eye to what we know is wrong.
